In September, California announced an imminent ban on the sale of new gasoline vehicles that will begin in 2035. In the UK, a similar order could come into effect five years earlier, according to reports from the Financial Times.
The report specifies that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who will speak next week, will announce a plan that will move the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel to 2030. The plan, which moves one plan further forward. which had already been moved from 2040 to 2035 earlier this year, would include a warning that would allow the sale of hybrids to continue into 2035 to ease the transition to what presumably would be an all-electric future.
As in the case of California, this appears to be a ban on the sale of new cars only, meaning it would in no way restrict existing gas-powered cars. The date of the change itself doesn’t seem entirely certain either, with the Financial Times adding that those inside the Prime Minister’s office had discussed both the 2030 date they are reporting and a more conservative timeline starting in 2032. Johnson is apparently set on the 2030 timeline, however, leaving only ten years of new UK petrol car sales.
