A new study confirms that the crypto industry has made a lot of progress to bridge the gender gap. It shows that the start-ups that lead the ICOs are still strongly dominated by men: over 85% of the team members in the companies interviewed are men. The data also suggest that women are even less likely to hold management and advisory positions.

Four out of five startups do not have a female executive

The research conducted by Longhash covers 100 projects of initial token offer (ICO) listed by ICO Rating, a website that tracks the sales of new tokens. The cryptographic analysis platform gathered data on the general gender balance of each team, on the number of female managers, including the founders, as well as on the percentage of women among their consultants.

According to the report, 14.5% of the team members are women, with only 7% of the executive roles occupied by women. Their number among consultants is only a little higher – 8 percent. In addition, almost four out of five startups (78%) do not have a single female C level leader and 75% do not have female councilors.

The survey is based on information published on the project websites. The companies listed a total of 1,062 team members, including 326 founders and managers and 473 consultants. Another fundamental fact is that over a third of companies, or 37%, have no female employees at all. The authors believe they are saying numbers and warn that they may also be overly optimistic:

In the case of consultants, if two peripheral startups that had large consultative committees with over 25% of women were discarded, the overall percentage of women in advisory roles falls below 6%. And in the case of executives, there was only one startup among the 100 that we saw that had more than one woman in an executive role.

It turns out, for example, that cryptographic companies with a woman on their advisory board are "slightly less likely" to have a woman member of their executive team.

On the other hand, startups that have at least one woman in an executive role seem to be more likely to have a female counselor. Longhash warns, however, that in both cases the differences and the samples are relatively small to draw reliable conclusions.

The authors of the report also note that the technology industry in general remains largely dominated by men. They indicate other field studies that indicate a less pronounced but still evident imbalance. For example, a study published by the Statist on March 8, International Women's Day, shows that women made up 26 to 43 percent of those employed in eight leading technology companies last year. And in 2015, they held 25% of executive roles. Moreover, according to another study published by the Carta software platform in September of this year, less than a third of employees of small technology startups are women.

Some representatives of the crypto industry have tried to solve the problem. Following allegations that his leadership had become a "club for old boys", the Swiss Crypto Valley Association recently elected two female members in his council. According to a recent report, the imminent major reshuffle of its management team will not affect their roles.
