Once every 20 years, Jupiter and Saturn almost intersect in the sky and this year the two largest planets in the solar system intersect during the winter solstice.
According to EarthSky, the two planets will be only 0.1 degrees apart at their closest point on December 21st. Being so close, the two planets will appear to be about the same size as a fifth of a full moon.
According to EarthSky, the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in December 2020 has been the closest of the two planets in the night sky since 1623.
The two planets will appear in the early evening sky for the rest of the year. Jupiter will be the brightest object in the western sky for the rest of the year.
