Psychiatrists believe that unemployment, poverty and depression are the main causes responsible for the increase in suicides.

In this regard, the psychiatric specialist, Dr. Shawky Azoury, explained in an interview with “Sky News Arabia”, that some people could reach the stage of suicide due to their suffering from mental illness.

Azoury felt that “this interpretation cannot be accepted in the current situation”, stating: “We in Lebanon have reached difficult stages of hunger, poverty and humiliation, which push people to commit suicide, and here the reason for suicide is not for reasons psychological, but for hunger and preservation of dignity “. .

He added: “It is difficult to find solutions for people who wish to commit suicide in these difficult circumstances, and the best example of this is the man who committed suicide on Hamra Street in Beirut.”

He continued: “The man hung a piece of paper with the inscription (I am not an infidel, but hunger is an infidel) around his neck, and this sentence indicates that he committed suicide not because of psychological problems, but because of poverty and the deterioration of the economic situation “.
