According to Chinese state media, the Chinese Chang’e 5 mission spacecraft successfully landed on the surface of the Moon. The mission’s goal is to bring 2 kilograms of lunar surface samples to Earth after more than 40 years.

According to Chinese state media, the Chinese Chang’e 5 probe on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 “successfully landed on the moon in a pre-selected landing area.”

The goal of the Chang’e 5 mission, which began on November 24, is to obtain samples of the lunar surface so that scientists can learn more about the moon’s origin. Chang’e 5 is the first mission to obtain samples from the Moon since 1976.

During a similar mission 44 years ago, the Soviet Union’s Luna 24 probe returned with approximately 170 grams of samples. However, Mission Chang’e 5, named after the legendary Chinese moon goddess, plans to bring up to 2 kilograms of lunar rock samples to Earth.

China’s space program has mainly developed over the past two decades. In 2003, China became the third nation (after the US and Russia / USSR) to launch a man into space. Since then, it has expanded its program with the ambition of creating a mission that would transport the human crew to the lunar surface.
