The progressive conservative government is set to introduce legislation today that would give the province the authority to temporarily limit the amount of apps like UberEats and DoorDash can charge restaurants in the gray or closed COVID-19 restriction zone for their services, according to the source.
Documents obtained from the Canadian press say companies that violate the bill could face fines of up to $ 10 million.
The source says the limit hasn’t been set yet, but the province is looking for something similar to what has been done in New York City, which recently reduced delivery app fees to 20% to help restaurants hold on. to the pandemic.
The bill also aims to protect couriers’ pay and ensure businesses don’t restrict their delivery zones or exclude certain restaurants, the source says.
The proposed law is intended to provide temporary relief for restaurants that are now forced to rely on delivery and takeaway orders as their only source of revenue due to COVID-19 restrictions banning indoor service, the source says. .
