After discovering the object in September, it was first classified as an asteroid. However, telescope observations in the Hawaiian islands revealed his true identity. NASA’s leading asteroid expert Paul Chodas had a good idea that it was part of the US Unmanned Surveyor 2 program’s Atlas-Centaur rocket.
As part of a failed mission to land on the moon, the rocket was launched on September 20, 1966.
The facility, formally called 2020 SO, entered Earth’s orbit last month and approached just over 50,476 kilometers on Tuesday. In March, it is expected to be re-deflected to another orbit and approach Earth again in 2036.
