The telescope collapsed after the structure’s three remaining cables showed signs of extreme stress. The radio telescope had already suffered severe damage after a cable that helped support the 900-ton platform suspended 450 feet above the dish broke in August. A few weeks later, a second cable gave way, exposing the telescope to greater risk. With fewer cables supporting the platform, it eventually gave way.
