A frosty moon shines over Europe before a week that will see UK temperatures plummet and the first big snow of winter expected.
Known as “the frost moon,” this month’s full moon was photographed tonight behind Hardy’s Monument near Dorchester in Dorset.
The frosty moon will appear full for about two to three days and it is also known as Beaver Moon or Mourning Moon.
This year, the icy moon features a partial lunar eclipse that will be visible to the eye for about an hour, but it will be so faint that some people “will swear that nothing is happening even as they stare at it,” reports EarthSky.
The various names come from groups of Native Americans who used the moon to follow the seasons.
It comes as forecasters warned that freezing temperatures of around -5C could sweep the UK within the next week and bring a blanket of snow with them.
