Premier François Legault said Tuesday that the COVID-19 pandemic is “stable” in Quebec, but he doesn’t believe public health measures could be lifted in the coming weeks.

“We seem to have struck a certain balance,” Legault said at a news conference. “This means that the measures we have put in place are working.”

Legault’s remarks came as the province reported 982 new cases on Tuesday and another 24 deaths. Admissions rise to 47, for a total of 638.

Legault said the situation is stabilizing across the province, with the exception of the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region.

The premier said he knows that families across Quebec want to know if they will be able to reunite over the holidays. The government will make a decision in the next few days, he said.

“There won’t be any big parties,” Legault said, “but we’re trying to see the number of people who can get together in homes without creating a new wave.”
