Citizens may soon pay their local taxes and bills using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. A member of the British parliament, Eddie Hughes, Conservative MP for the Walsall North constituency, wants UK residents to be able to pay local taxes and bills using cryptography.
According to reports, Hughes believes it is time for other members of Parliament to become familiar with cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, as they are not going away. Since its launch in 2009, Bitcoin has caused a lot of fanfare that has led to significant adoption worldwide. The crypto community is growing rapidly and Hughes wants the government to be part of this growth.
The fifty-year-old parliamentarian noted that some key actors in the country have adopted cryptic use. He gave an example of the British charity RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) which recently began accepting donations for cryptocurrency. Hughes said that if people can donate to the organization using cryptocurrencies, then the government could create a system to allow for the payment of municipal taxes and other bills using encrypted ones as well.
Hughes's suggestion comes two weeks after Ohio became the first state in America to allow companies to make tax payments using cryptocurrency. The Ohio government has worked with BitPay to manage the encrypted and converted dollar payments. Josh Mandel, the Republican state treasurer of Ohio, proposed the idea. It is said that Mandel is a fan of cryptocurrency that describes him as "a legitimate form of currency".
While commenting on the matter, Mandel said he proposed the idea because he wanted Ohio to become a leading state in the cryptic US market.
Hughes is following in the footsteps of Mandel and wants the UK to "plant a flag" and take the initiative by demonstrating how similar projects could work in the region. He added that the country is at a crossroads to determine their future. Believes to take the initiative on the blockchain and its technologies could prove useful for the country in general.
In his view, Hughes believes that people should start taking actions to understand cryptocurrencies to facilitate faster adoption. He concludes by adding that if people realize how blockchain and digital currencies work, they will embrace them.
