The Blockchain effect: 1,000 digital marriage licenses produced in Washoe County

There are rumors of a "blockchain city" east of Reno, but Washoe County has been using the new technology for eight months already.

"We have distributed 1,000 digital marriage certificates worldwide," said Hunter Halcomb, systems engineer at Washoe County's registry office.

Washoe County uses the blockchain to register marriage licenses in a much safer and faster way. The technology allows the county to have a list of running certificates, which can not be tampered with. The marriage license can be delivered worldwide in just a few minutes.

"We sent marriage certificates to Spain, Canada, more countries in Asia," said Halcomb.

Blockchain is a list of transactions distributed on certain computers on the Internet. When someone makes a transaction, all computers must accept the change. Basically it eliminates the central authority that authenticates the transactions.

In the near future, blockchain will become an even larger part of Washoe County's document archiving plan.

"We have the task of permanently archiving all the deeds and marriage certificates, we make them go back to the beginning of the county," said Halcomb. "Our archive of all those documents will be protected on the same blockchain using the same technology and we will do it out in the next year."
