Tomorrow, Sunday morning, a number of Arab countries will witness a rare astronomical phenomenon, as the moon will move in front of the planet Mars and freeze it temporarily and the event can be followed with the naked eye or with binoculars.

This phenomenon is called “occultation”, and will be observed in the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Mauritania before sunrise, as well as central South America. In the rest of the Arab regions, the event will only be observed as a conjunction between the moon and Mars, as it will be separated by about one degree before sunrise.

Mars will disappear behind the illuminated part of the lunar disk and reappear on the dark side, and during this event the moon will be in a hump phase decreasing and illuminated by 87.5%, while the brightness of Mars reaches (-1.8), and the phenomenon should begin at 21:00, Cairo time, even before dawn The sun for the next day.

Observers in the Mauritanian city of Nouakchott will be able to observe the phenomenon, with the beginning of the partial occlusion of Mars, up to the total occlusion, and the planet will remain behind the moon until it reappears from the bottom of the moon for the observer.

In general, Mars and the Moon will appear close to each other, and this is only on the dome of the sky because they are in the same line of sight as seen from Earth.

The occultation can only be seen from a small part of the earth’s surface because the moon is much closer to the earth than other celestial bodies, so its exact position in the sky varies depending on your position on earth, it differs from two points on both sides of the earth by two or four degrees Times the diameter of a full moon.

This means that if the moon is aligned to pass a planet or star for an observer on one side of the earth, it will appear two degrees away from that object on the other side of the earth, so for the rest of the world, the moon will appear to pass only near the red planet.
