Starbucks could accept cryptocurrency | GeekWire

For technologies that have been announced as the future of payments, it's really hard to actually use digital currencies like Bitcoin or Etherium to buy things in the real world. A technology and retail company partnership that includes Starbucks and Microsoft plans to support a new company designed to solve this gap.

Bakkt is a new company launched on Friday by the Intercontinental Exchange, a provider of electronic markets for financial services and owner of the New York Stock Exchange. Using Microsoft's cloud technology, Bakkt intends to build "an integrated platform that allows consumers and institutions to buy, sell, store and spend digital resources on a global network without interruption," he said in a press release.

Starbucks has long shown an interest in the development and control of payment technologies used in its 24,000 stores worldwide. He was one of the first retailers to experiment with smartphone payments and, after some minor inconveniences, he now has more people using his mobile payment app in the US than Apple Pay technology embedded in modern iPhones.
