In today Spotlight Speaker we're talking about Pixowl COO and co-founder Sebastien Borget.

Passionate about blockchain technology, games and education, he is a very active and evangelist speaker who has spent the past eight years focusing exclusively on mobile gaming, creating successful games that have been downloaded millions of times.

At Blockchain Gamer Connects London, Borget will be part of a panel on non-fungible Tokens (NFT) standards.

PocketGamer.biz: Could you talk a little bit about the company?

Sebastien Borget: Sandbox is a community-driven, decentralized platform where creators can monetize voxel resources and gaming experiences on the blockchain.

We are moving our HIT mobile game for content created by the Sandbox user (40 million installations, 70 million created worlds and 1.2 million active monthly players) into new realms with a multiplayer 3D version that leverages technology blockchain.

We aim to destroy the market by providing the producer community with the true ownership of their creations as non-fungible tokens (NFT) and be rewarded for their participation in the ecosystem.

Our platform offers a Voxel editor that allows anyone (including children!) To create 3D resources, a market for trading and selling, and finally the game to use them.

What does your role involve?

I manage the operations of our international team (45 people) and supervise the production, live operations and marketing of the company's main titles.

This includes the famous The Sandbox creation game launched in 2012 and the sequel The Sandbox Evolution (40m installations to date), the new decentralized platform on blockchain and city games (Snoopy Town and Goosebumps HorrorTown). .

Why did you want to work in the gaming industry?

Apple and Android operating systems have reopened a whole world of video game opportunities. Making video games was no longer reserved for large teams and studios with multi-million dollar budgets, developing triple-A games for PCs or consoles. It was again accessible to us, indie!

From now on, I wanted to create a game that could create a community of players and engage them in creating with us. Our vision of The Sandbox has always become a leading creative mobile gaming platform where, # Players are # Makers, sharing pixel worlds, pixel art, game levels, music and more!

With our third edition of The Sandbox, in 3D, in multiplayer and using Blockchain, we think we have every chance to compete against Minecraft and Roblox; offering a unique experience where players will truly own their creations and be able to fully monetize them.

This is the break that we are bringing to the established leaders in The Sandbox.

What advice would you give to anyone trying to deepen?

The mobile gaming industry is extremely competitive. Making a successful game does not just mean being creative and having a good game.

It is about excellence in execution, in data analysis, in understanding who your audience is, in engaging a community of players, in the development of an intelligent marketing strategy and in the creation of a product that is visually convincing but also and above all quite engaging to keep players for several weeks.

And the icing on the cake, which is doing well enough to drive the kind of revenue to make your business work.

Luck can be part of the game, but it works only if all the above ingredients are also present.

And now there is the gaming blockchain industry and I think we are experiencing a very exciting time for the blockchain industry as there are more than a hundred companies in space so far, among the hundreds of thousands of game studies that exist globally.

This is the perfect time to enter this market, but also to think that the blockchain itself is a technology and not a finality; so you have to create fantastic games and not forget where the gaming industry comes from and all the experience gained just because you are entering this new market.

What are your opinions on the sector in the last 12 months?

It has been a very interesting year for 2018 and several games have been announced (including our project The Sandbox) with the promise of offering a high quality graphic / visual experience, but also offering something new to the industry: leaving that players really own their articles and be able to make money through their skills and efforts in games!

Some studies have announced in late 2018 a series of major investments to build platforms for developers (or creators in the case of The Sandbox) and this is very exciting for 2019; as it will lead to more games thanks to these platforms and tools.

What are the main trends expected in the next 12 months?

Many game studies are currently experimenting with blockchain and what kind of new gameplay could naturally emerge through technology.

At the same time, I am sure we will see progressively the next big blockchain hits – comparable to Angry Birds, Clash Royale, Candy Crush or Hearthstone in the major categories of games like MMO, RPG, FPS, Strategy and casino games. The trend could be more hardcore games at first then progressively more casual and mainstream titles.

After the huge success of CryptoKitties, the next generation of games is starting to hit the market only in 2019 and we will see an increasing number of games that use blockchain technology while creating very engaging gaming experiences.

This includes both games that are fully chained games (which means that almost all game actions involve a blockchain transaction) or mainly off-chain games with their blockchain resources (providing a game experience that can be played without knowledge of what the blockchain is).

How has the gaming industry changed since you started?

They are in the mobile gaming industry since 2011 and now in both mobile / F2P and blockchain games. I like to see the mass adoption of new technologies and the way we are opening up new markets for players.

Obviously it takes time, but I am very confident that this is a very exciting time to enter this industry!
