SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has an ambitious plan to launch two remote-controlled cars into space so they can race on the moon’s surface. Musk plans to send the mini vehicles to the moon in October 2021 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
This is part of the recently announced Moon Mark Mission 2021 project, which will see students compete to design, build, land and race two vehicles on the Moon. It will start in the first half of 2021 and is open to youth teams from all over the world.
High school students all over the world will compete in eight weeks of qualifying challenges before six five-member teams go head-to-head to become the last two to run on the moon. Their adventures will be captured, produced and distributed globally by Moon Mark, a multimedia education company.
The latter two teams will complete the pilot’s projects in Houston, Texas, before being loaded onto the lander that will transport them to Kennedy Space Center and then to the moon.
Iconic automobile designer Frank Stephenson has been named Racer Design Director for Moon Mark Mission 2021. Stephenson is known for his design work at Ferrari, BMW, McLaren and more.
Stephenson will do it offer his world-class experience to the latter two as they enter the competition stages to run on the lunar surface, guiding them to functionally design the last stages of the two runners who will compete for the first checkered flag on the Moon.
“This is a project that helps develop the innovators of the future, enabling them to dream big and realize that nothing is impossible,” said Frank Stephenson about the project. “The space is a fascinating place that remains unused for budding designers and I look forward to sharing some of my knowledge with those involved in this groundbreaking project.”
