Some Cedarcroft Place residents have been relocated to the hospital area as part of an effort to contain the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak at the Stratford retirement home, public health officials announced in a press release Saturday afternoon.

The relocation follows several days when area health partners work together to secure staff to replace those employees – 15 as of Friday – who have tested positive in the past two weeks.

“What we do know is that they are planning to move some residents,” said Barbara Leavitt, public health spokesperson for Huron Perth. “If there were any (residents) who were transferred (to the hospital) today it was because of their medical conditions, not because of this plan to move in response to the outbreak.

Leavitt said Cedarcroft administrators and their local health partners have not yet said whether residents who will move to the hospital as part of the outbreak management plan tested positive for COVID-19.

As of Friday, there were 51 confirmed cases of COVID-19 associated with the Cedarcroft outbreak: 36 residents and 15 employees. Four residents have died, two are in hospital, one is in intensive care, and two have recovered. Among the staff who tested positive, five have recovered.

“While the staff at Cedarcroft, Huron Perth Public Health and Southwest LHIN have been phenomenal in recent days, we need to reduce the number of residents at the facility and ensure sufficient staffing for those who remain,” said Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance CEO Andrew Williams in the press release. “We have also been well supported by (public health) and EMS.”

The health alliance will continue to work closely with All Seniors Care Living Centers, the company that owns and operates Cedarcroft, and other local partners on the resident relocation plan, which will include a decision on which residents will be relocated. At this time, affected residents and families are being contacted by Cedarcroft Place.

Huron Perth Public Health said more details will be shared as they become available over the weekend.
