Small businesses will not survive the second block, warns CFIB

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) warns that the fragility of many small businesses will lead to their closure if there is another lockdown without the right financial help from the government.

The CFIB said in a statement that as cities, provinces and feds move towards new closures due to spikes in COVID-19 cases, they must “provide immediate and comprehensive financial support to affected businesses.”

The CFIB previously estimated that 160,000 businesses in the country could permanently close their doors due to COVID-19, but now warns that the total could rise to 225,000.

“” We are all in this together “means that entrepreneurs should not be asked to cover the costs of protecting society through new economic blocks alone,” CFIB President Dan Kelly said in a statement.

“They need full, immediate and ongoing support in any jurisdiction where new restrictions are introduced.”
