Pasta, rice, nuts, breakfast cereals and confectionery are now available unpackaged at Migros service stations. Customers can fill and weigh up to 70 items independently. Reusable bags made of organic cotton are available for transport home.
Migros takes a stand against single-use packaging, as the retailer writes in a press release. Furthermore, customers can define the quantities themselves, reducing food waste. Own brands are offered at the same price as packaged products.
The Baden branch receives the first petrol station in German-speaking Switzerland. More branches will be added shortly. “Before a broad introduction, it is important for us that customers can give us feedback on what works well and what can still be optimized,” explains Matthias Wunderlin, head of marketing at the Federation of Migros Cooperatives.
The new filling stations are part of Migros’ promise to reduce 6,000 tonnes of packaging material by the end of 2020 or to replace it with more environmentally friendly alternatives. Migros is already exceeding this target and is saving nearly 7,000 tonnes of packaging material. This corresponds to over 10 percent of annual consumption. This year alone Migros managed to make 1,870 tonnes of packaging material more environmentally friendly.
