Saudi Arabia leads the Arab countries in the scientific research share and is ranked 29th in the world

The annual tables of the Nature Index for the year 2020 showed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is ahead of the Arab countries in terms of scientific research, as it is the only country besides the Emirates that has entered the global list of 50 countries with the largest share of scientific research.

The Kingdom ranked 29th globally and for the third consecutive year maintained its position among the countries with the highest number of scientific research achievements in the world, the largest contributor to Arab research share and the second most great contributor among the countries of the Middle East and Africa.

The annual Nature Index tables for this year included 19 Arab countries, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt ranked in the top three, respectively, since 2017, and the Kingdom has reached nearly 65% ​​of the total share of scientific research for Arab countries, while the UAE achieved a notable increase of 18% In the adjusted share As for Egypt, in the same period it maintained the first position in North Africa and the second in Africa.

It has been ranked according to the production growth of high quality scientific research institutions from the year 2015 AD until the year 2019 AD and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) was the only institution in the Middle region East and North Africa to be included in the list of the “100 most rising stars of the world” in scientific research. Earth and Environment, the only institution of the Arab countries in the list of the “100 rising stars of the world” in scientific research, has acquired the largest share of research in Arab countries in the last three years, with more than 50% of the scientific research shares of institutions of the Arab countries put together.

In the ranking of Saudi academic institutions, King Abdulaziz University, King Saud University and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals retained the centers. Alfaisal University, King Abdullah International Center for Medical Research and King Faisal University joined the top ten list, to join Prince Muhammad bin Fahd University, the National Center for Nanotechnology (nanotechnology) in King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, and King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences.

Among the top 15 academic institutions contributing to scientific research in Arab countries are King Abdullah University for Science and Technology, King Abdulaziz University, King Saud University, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.

Interestingly, the Nature Index is an indicator of institutional research performance and is based on the organization of its listings on the results of institution or state publications in 82 natural science journals, chosen on the basis of reputation by an independent committee leading scientists in their fields, taking into account the quality of research and institutional performance.
