More than half of News 95.7’s staff in Halifax are fired, as parent company Rogers Media deals with what it calls a “seismic shift” in the industry on top of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The layoffs, which take effect on November 27, will reduce the number of staff at the news / talk radio station from 14 to six.
“We are modernizing our business to position ourselves for growth as we address the continuing effects of a seismic shift in the media industry from traditional to digital and the challenges of the global pandemic,” Rogers Media spokesperson Andrea Goldstein said in an email. .
“Decisions like this are never easy, especially as they don’t reflect the tremendous talent, dedication and passion shown by team members who leave the company.”

News 95.7 was launched in October 2005 with a news, conference and sports format. Its website says the station “provides the most comprehensive, local, live and breaking news” in Halifax.
On Wednesday, reporters and hosts took to social media to thank listeners.
Todd Veinotte, presenter of the Todd Veinotte Show, tweeted that his last two shows will air this weekend. He will answer calls for two hours on Saturday, he said.
The afternoon host of the Sheldon MacLeod Show said in a tweet that he appreciates the support.
“Thanks for all the kind words team. Still more shows before we’re done,” MacLeod said.
