Rivian R1S: A sleeper electric SUV that starts at $ 70,000 and comes to the luxury market

The Rivian R1S has been a bit of a sleeper model living in the shadow of the R1T pickup, but the production version of the electric SUV is now being unveiled starting at $ 70,000 and could make it to the luxury market.

While Rivian has distanced himself from a luxury marque and focused on “adventure” instead, the R1S electric SUV seems to fit perfectly in vehicles like the Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator.

And now that Rivian has unveiled the final price and configurations for the first version of the R1T and R1S, the price also fits the luxury segment.

They have 2 more battery options, one smaller and one larger, coming after 2022, but for now they are offering three configurations all on one battery pack that will allow for over 300 miles of range.

For the R1S, it starts at $ 70,000 before incentives and goes up to $ 77,500 for the Adventure or Launch Edition package:

It’s large enough for a third row and will be offered in both 5 and 7-seater configurations:

The first version of the R1S will also have a towing capacity of up to 7,700 lbs.

These are all things you can expect from other luxury SUVs, but the R1S is built with the same four-motor electric powertrain as Rivian’s very capable electric pickup truck and those quad engines can provide enough power for the electric SUV to accelerate from to 60 mph in just 3 seconds.

It’s not the kind of performance that comes with a Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator.

Rivian has also taken the car conencted approach with over-the-air software updates:

“Our cloud-based architecture and on-board computer network integrate your vehicle, charging and Rivian app through a single user interface. Over-the-air updates continually improve the vehicle, updating everything from driving dynamics to touchscreen games. “

The Rivian R1S will hit the market a few months after the R1T electric pickup.

The first deliveries are scheduled for August 2021.

The taking of Electrek

We often forget to mention the R1S because the R1T is at the heart of the race to build the first all-electric pickup truck, but the vehicle is built on the same platform and is well packaged to compete in the full-size luxury SUV segment in my opinion.

In that segment, it’s competitively priced and I think it outperforms virtually every vehicle currently available.

In addition to being a luxury vehicle, it has been thoroughly tested in the worst possible conditions in recent years and looks ready to take on anything that can be thrown at it.

When you also take the $ 7,500 tax credit into consideration, I think Rivian might have a winning product here that could convince some big SUV fans to switch to electric.
