Ikea Richmond will celebrate Black Friday not only by selling furniture, but by buying back used furniture gently in an effort to reduce consumption.
People can drop off their old furniture, not just Ikea furniture, and electronics at a contactless delivery point in Ikea’s Richmond parking lot on Saturday, November 28 from 10:00 to 16:00
Customers who bring a mobile will receive a $ 25 coupon on a purchase of $ 150 or more.
The recycling program, hosted by the non-profit HomeStart Foundation, will collect a wide range of furniture and household items from donors and then distribute them to people and families in need.
“Sustainability is becoming the defining problem of our time,” said Cédric Gulbierz, market manager at Ikea Richmond. “Our vision at Ikea has always been to create a better everyday life for many people, which means making a sustainable life easy and affordable for everyone.”
He added Ikea wants to “change the conversation from mass consumption to mass circularity”.
“Initiatives such as the donation campaign are beneficial to all: we can divert good quality furniture from the landfill, also supporting those who need it within our local communities,” he added.
The collected furniture will be used by families living in small spaces. Therefore, smaller furniture is required, such as dressers, kitchen tables and chairs, coffee tables, computer desks, armchairs, bookcases, and sofas (under six feet).
On Sunday November 29, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver will accept donations of clothing in the Ikea Richmond parking lot between 10am and 2pm. Donors are encouraged to bring carefully used clothing, accessories, bags, shoes, boots and underwear.
Meanwhile, Resonator – a member of the Electronics Products Recycling Association (EPRA) – will also collect used electronics in the delivery area.
