Renault after the survey on electric cars: “We must better inform consumers”

Renault, together with market research firm Ipsos, conducted a representative study with 5,000 participants in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Great Britain in August. Eight out of ten Europeans want rapid expansion of electromobility. In addition to the desire for a wider range of electric and hybrid models, many have indicated that they may expect a change soon.

“European drivers are convinced of the benefits of electric vehicles – especially for the environment,” according to the study authors. “Many are considering purchasing an electric or hybrid vehicle. The survey reflects what we also see in our car dealerships: more and more customers are looking for our hybrid and electric models and want to try them. “

According to the study, it is mainly younger motorists with growing environmental awareness who are driving the growth of electric mobility: 46% of under 34s say they are ready to switch to an electric car. 50 percent would choose a hybrid model as their next car. Additionally, 76% of respondents found driving an electric or hybrid vehicle to be more enjoyable than a conventional vehicle.

Most respondents (76%) had so far had little practical relevance to electric vehicles. More than half of the study participants were unaware that plug-in hybrid vehicles use an internal combustion engine in addition to an electric one. Many people also did not know that the charging process of electric cars can be programmed, that the electricity from the battery can be fed back into the grid and that the batteries are reusable. Many respondents are also unaware that vehicle maintenance is significantly cheaper than a combustion engine. Renault therefore sees the lack of experience in electric car management as one of the biggest obstacles to the transition.

“More and more consumers want a cleaner, cheaper and more powerful driving experience,” says the study, “but often lack the knowledge of what electric and hybrid vehicles are, what benefits they offer, which models are available and which incentives are associated with them we are. We need to better inform consumers. And anyone who has ever had an electric driving experience is more likely to be ready to change. “

Renault has relied on electric cars from the start and the small second generation ZOE is now selling very well. The French want to defend their market leadership in Europe from competition with the new models. The next pure electric car will be the production version of the Mégane eVision on the market next year. New hybrid vehicles will also be introduced.
