Corning and PPG Industries say they are working to register an antiviral paint product with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA; Washington, DC) that contains Corning Guardiant, a glass-ceramic technology that has been shown to be effective in killing the COVID-19 virus. . The effectiveness of the technology has been demonstrated in tests approved by the EPA.
The product contains copper, which has been shown to be antimicrobial when applied to surfaces, according to Corning. “Our scientists developed this unique paint additive using our highly engineered glass ceramic technology,” says Wendell Weeks, Corning president and CEO. “We are excited about the new lab results and look forward to working with our valued partner PPG.”
PPG’s antiviral paint product will be called Copper Armor. “After registering with the EPA, we look forward to launching a paint product containing Corning Guardiant in the coming months, providing customers with additional protection from [COVID-19] in areas with the highest health risk, ”says PPG President and CEO Michael McGarry.
Corning is partnering with paint and coatings manufacturers globally, including PPG, to develop coatings that include Guardiant technology and meet regulatory requirements around the world, the company says.
