A millionaire cryptocurrency revealed that his plans for a utopian community in the Nevada desert flow completely on blockchain.
The New York Times reports that the man behind the project, Jeffrey Berns, is planning a city that would be entirely based on blockchain, a decentralized infrastructure that could theoretically provide the foundation for a community independent of the capitalist world in which we live. government and large corporations in control, the city based on the blockchain would put power in the hands of the people and would use the cryptocurrency as the currency of the kingdom.
"The city aims to show how business development, residential life and commerce can thrive together with technologies that change the world," reads a description on the website of Tom Wiscombe Architecture, one of the community's designers. "Multiple innovative technologies will change the way residents interact daily and blockchain technology will be at the center of everything – maintaining honest, just and democratic systems."
The area that Berns has designed for his city includes 67,000 acres of land in the Nevada desert that the governor of Nevada Brian Sandoval has dubbed "Innovation Park". It surrounds an industrial park in which Tesla's Gigafactory is located, as well as buildings that possess technology giants such as Google and Apple.
The company founded by Berns, Blockchains LLC, purchased the property at the start of this year for a value of $ 170 million, according to the NYT. Berns is able to finance the entire project – including the additional $ 300 million he has already put in the country – with the money he bought from an investment in the Ethereum cryptocurrency in 2015.
"Something inside me tells me this is the answer," Berns told the NYT. "If we can get enough people to trust the blockchain, we can start changing all the systems we work with."
Berns says that Blockchains plans to start building the city no earlier than 2019, but the company has yet to develop a master plan and get the county's approval.
