Ontario is reporting 1,855 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday – a new record in the province and a strong increase from 1,478 confirmed on Thursday.
Most of the new cases are found in the Peel region (517), followed by Toronto (494), the York region (189) and the Halton region (130).
The province said it had completed more than 58,000 tests the previous day.
The previous record was 1,589 cases on Monday.
The latest numbers come as GTA regions outside of Toronto and Peel Region – two currently blocked virus hotspots – prepare for Black Friday shoppers as shopping malls open in York, Durham and Halton regions. There are concerns that those in the locked areas may shop elsewhere in the GTA.
On Thursday, the province released its updated projections since the blockade went into effect on Monday. Health officials said Ontario could see 9,000 new cases of COVID-19 a day with the number of ICU patients expected to hit 200 by the end of next month.
New provincial data shows that COVID-19 hospitalizations in Ontario have increased by more than 63% in the past four weeks and that deaths in long-term care homes are on the rise, even as the number of cases among staff and residents appears to flatten .
