Ontario reported 1,707 new cases of COVID-19 and seven new deaths on Tuesday, as positivity across the province soared above 5% and Toronto hit a new one-day record.
“Locally, there are 727 new cases in Toronto, 373 in Peel and 168 in the York region,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said on Twitter.
Toronto’s number for Tuesday is a new one-day high, nearly 100 more cases than on Monday.
Ontario reported 1,746 new cases on Monday, 1,708 on Sunday, and 1,822 on Saturday.
The seven-day moving average is now 1,670, up from 1,570 on Monday.
Provincial laboratories analyzed 34,640 samples in the past 24 hours, down nearly 5,000 since Monday and nearly 20,000 since Sunday.
Another 34,000 test samples remain under investigation.
As a result, the percentage positivity rate after accounting for errors and duplicate tests was 5.1% across the province.
Since the beginning of March, a total of 3,663 people have died from a new coronavirus infection, with 118,000 laboratory-confirmed cases since January 25 and 100,012 recoveries.
Six of the seven deaths reported on Tuesday involved long-term nursing home residents.
There are now 14,524 active cases of COVID-19 across Ontario, up from 12,917 a week ago.
Meanwhile, admissions continue to rise, with admissions to ICU beds approaching 200.
There are 645 people in the hospital receiving treatment for COVID-19 symptoms across the province, up from 631 on Monday.
Of these, 185 are in intensive care and 112 are breathing with the help of a ventilator.
Elsewhere in the GTA, the Durham region reported 72 new cases, the Halton region reported 47 new cases, and Hamilton reported 58 new cases.
