ZUG, Switzerland is CALGARY, Alberta, December 17, 2018 / PRNewswire / – In a pilot program presented today, ODEM, creator of the On-Demand Education marketplace, is collaborating with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology issue blockchain-based academic certificates in a select group of SAIT students. They will become the first graduate class at a Canadian post-secondary institution to receive digital credentials using blockchain technology.
Blockchain certificates enable students to directly share their academic achievements with recruiters and potential employers around the world without requiring their paper or electronic documents from SAIT. Blockchain technology creates a decentralized digital ledger to cryptographically guarantee the validity of credentials controlled by the recipient.

Twenty-five graduates of the SAIT automotive assistance program will receive blockchain certificates issued through the ODEM platform, a global education portal. Virtual certificates will resemble traditional academic documents, with the Province of Alberta of emblem and official seal SAIT. They also include the signatures of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute, of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and of the Registrar.

The idea of digitizing academic credentials in SAIT was born with students. George Chase,
Instructor of the School of Information and Communications Technologies, he worked with students to present the concept to the leadership of SAIT. The idea was finally expanded to create a complete solution for the institution.
ODEM is developing its platform on the Ethereum blockchain to make higher education more accessible, accessible, transferable and verifiable. The platform also allows students to customize their education through interaction with educators. Its official distribution is scheduled for February 2019.
Blockchain technology:
- Enables the creation of a decentralized repository to protect academic records in a format that is globally verifiable and transferable.
- Enables authorized peer-to-peer sharing of school documents with institutions, recruitment companies and potential employers.
- Facilitates linking of academic documents as students add their results in the course of a lifetime of learning.
The academic certificates issued on a blockchain generate a tamper-proof digital signature. The signature can be crossed with the digital signature of the issuing institution, allowing students to check their academic records and provide cryptographic validity tests in real time.
