The Russian gas company Gazprom wants to contest a one billion dollar fine in Poland for the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea. The company rejects the opinion of the Polish consumer protection and antitrust authority UOKiK, Gazprom said. The Russian company is expected to pay a fine of 29 billion zlotys (6.4 billion euros) for unauthorized deals.
The case was then referred to the Warsaw Court of Competition and Consumer Protection. It is a division of the district court that was set up specifically for anti-monopoly proceedings and regulation of the energy sector.

The background is the construction of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, on which several companies are said to have entered into agreements without waiting for the decisions of the Polish authorities. In addition, five Gazprom project partners, including German companies Uniper and Wintershall, received a total fine of 52 million euros, as announced in Warsaw in early October.
Poland is against the pipeline, which is supposed to pump Russian gas directly across the Baltic Sea to Germany for the European market. Poland and other countries criticize the fact that the project strengthens the influence of the energy superpower Russia in Europe and, for example, further weakens the role of the most important gas transit country, Ukraine. Gazprom stressed that it had not broken an anti-monopoly law. Construction of the pipeline has currently been halted due to US sanctions.
