Federal Minister of Territories Khalid Abdul Samad made headlines for his plans concerning the Harapan currency.
Initially, it was to be a fundraising tool for the Pakatan Harapan campaign. But what raised questions is a statement on the Harapan Coin website, which states that it may have the potential to become a national cryptocurrency.
Experts say it's a bad idea.
Think Tank Center for A Better Tomorrow (Cenbet) issued a statement stating that "it goes against the principles of good governance".
"I think it's a no-go for a political party to start a first coin offer (ICO) said Cenbet president, Datuk Simon Lim Seng Chai." This move is tantamount to buying votes. "
However, cryptocurrencies should not be completely closed, he said.
Instead, there should be regulations in place – and that's exactly what Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said will happen by the first quarter of 2019.
