The Popula subscription news platform made history by providing the first news article completely stored on a blockchain platform. At the beginning of this week, Maria Bustillos, the publisher of Popula, owned by journalists, announced that the placement of an article published on the website has now been archived in the distributed ledger.
According to the report, the article, which was initially published in Death + Taxes magazine, it was stored in full on the Ethereum blockchain and its hash was stored in the IPFS protocol. With these, it is expected that the article will remain on the blockchain forever. Or for as long as the Ethereum blockchain and the IFPS protocol continue to exist.
The archiving of the article was done with the help of engineers from the Blockchain startup, Civil, one of Popula's early supporters.
Bustillos, who said that the idea was with her since 2012 when she first came into contact with blockchain technology, noted that the goal of the project was to ensure the correct preservation of the articles . With an understanding of the functioning of the blockchain and its many advantages, it was able to conceive the idea, which has now materialized.
The journalist said that since his early days working with the blockchain, he has always believed that technology was able to create an authentically decentralized world and produce recordings that were immutable and whose integrity could not be easily corrupted.
However, he also admitted that he never really understood that this technology could be used as a means to protect the freedom of the press and the right that people have to speak freely. Bustillos cited examples of bookstores destroyed in the past, noting that the creative works memorized on the blockchain would make it much harder to destroy or corrupt records. Bustillos has also confirmed that every article put on Popula will now be filed also on the blockchain.
