The NEM Foundation in Argentina signed a memorandum of understanding with a local union of journalists. The goal of the agreement is to develop a blockchain solution for copyright protection, Cointelegraph in Spanish reported on Saturday 5 January.

The memorandum signed with CISPREN – the journalists' union of the city of Cordoba in central Argentina – also implies the development of a proof of concept for the project. CISPREN hopes the blockchain can solve various problems associated with the protection of intellectual property rights, such as content theft, non-payment of royalties and others.

The CISPREN press secretary, German Guismondi, told Cointelegraph that the authors will be able to upload their contents to blockchain, thus creating a timestamp as proof of authenticity. Each piece of content will have a unique QR code and a digital signature, which will act as additional safeguards for the author in the event of a dispute.

Blockchain is already used in journalism as a tool for managing content and author rights. For example, last year Forbes collaborated with the Civil blockchain platform to publish its contents on the decentralized network of this last one. The media agency intends to apply decentralized technologies to all its contents and allow writers to publish articles on Forbes and Civil at the same time.

Associated Press (AP) also collaborated with Civil last August, in order to monitor the use of its content with the use of blockchains. The press agency was interested in whether technology can help protect property rights and support ethical journalism.
