The Fredericton region (Zone 3) will revert to the orange phase at midnight Thursday night, joining the Saint John and Moncton regions in the more restrictive phase of the COVID-19 recovery.

“We need concerted action and we need it now,” said Dr. Jennifer Russell, noting that there have been many new cases and “worrying” cases resulting from interactions in large meetings.

All other health zones are in the yellow phase.

In the orange phase, residents must limit close contacts to a single family bubble, which can include a caregiver or family member from another family.

Russell also announced 12 new cases in New Brunswick, including eight in the Saint John region (Zone 2), three in the Fredericton region (Zone 3) and one in the Moncton region (Zone 1).

Higgs says “the threat is real”, urges patience, diligence

Community transmission of COVID-19 is “a real concern” in New Brunswick, Premier Blaine Higgs said at a news conference Thursday.

He raised concerns around bars and “the younger demographic”, urging them to follow health regulations to allow businesses to operate.

“At this point, the community transmission has not been confirmed, but the threat is real, so we are acting quickly” by returning the Fredericton region to the orange phase.

Higgs also noted that at midnight on Thursday evening “anyone, from anywhere, returning to New Brunswick must isolate themselves for 14 days”.

It has taken note of the following exemptions: commercial vehicles and persons traveling for work, business, medical, childcare or childcare purposes.

The premier also noted that enforcement efforts have so far resulted in the issuance of 71 fines and 140 tickets for non-compliance.

“I know it’s not easy to deal with peace officers, but it’s all for our good,” he said.

The province is doing “so well,” Higgs said. “Let’s not lose it in the end. Be patient and follow the rules.”

COVID forces the curtain to open on the virtual stage

The Capitol Theater in Moncton insists the show must end, despite COVID-19.

Kim Rayworth, the theater’s chief executive, said virtual performances have been staged for the Christmas period.

Some of these performances include A Christmas at home with Pomodoro / Pomodoro e Christmas with Les Muses next month.

The Capitol is collaborating with three other theaters in the province to present four solo performances simultaneously in the new year.

The partnership is with the University of Moncton, the Monument-Lefebvre Theater and the Dieppe Arts and Culture Center, in collaboration with Coup de cœur francophone.
