The US space agency, NASA, is planning to advance its technology by adding Blockchain to provide air traffic services and support, according to media reports.
The agency will work with an open source Blockchain platform called "Hyperledger Fabric" specifically designed for business transactions that resemble typical air traffic management interactions, Ronald J. Reisman, aeronautical engineer at NASA Ames Research Center, said in a statement.
Blockchain would address potential privacy issues, preventing spoofing, denial of service and other attacks, Reisman said.
He stated that Blockchain presents an engineering prototype that embodies a design and method that can be applied to mitigate security issues.
"The innovation of design is the use of an authorized open source Blockchain framework to allow aircraft privacy and anonymity, while providing a safe and efficient method for communicating with the services of the air traffic, operational support or other authorized entities, "he noted.
The new framework also includes certification authorities, support for smart contracts and broader bandwidth communication channels for private information that can be used for secure communications between any specific aircraft and any authorized member.
The prototype demonstrates how this method can be delivered economically and quickly in a scalable modular environment, said Reisman.
