“The gas giant could float in a bathtub if there were such a colossal thing.”

On September 30, 1996, the space agency’s iconic Hubble Space Telescope turned its attention to Saturn.

Hubble took a series of images in black and white, orange and blue, green and red to create a realistic portrait of the ringed planet.

NASA’s image processing specialists then worked on the image to produce a sharp image with subtle shades of yellow, brown, and gray.

NASA has now shared the image as part of its Hubble Classic series, tweeting: “#HubbleClassic Hubble captured this natural color view of clouds and haze on Saturn in September 1996.”
