The space agency administrator said he was leaving his role as Biden would need someone he “trusted” in charge.
“The right question here is ‘What is NASA’s best interest as an agency and what is the best interest of the American exploration program?’ “he told Aviation Week.
“For this, what you need is someone who has a close relationship with the president of the United States. You need someone the administration trusts.
“I think I wouldn’t be the right person for this in a new administration.
“We’ve been very successful, but it’s because of the relationships.
“You have to have those relationships. Whoever the president is, he has to have someone he knows and trusts and someone the administration trusts.
“That person won’t be me.”
Mr Bridenstine, a former Oklahoma Republican Congressman, was nominated by Trump in 2017.
His appointment was criticized for politicizing the agency and was confirmed in April 2018 along the lines of the party.
Under his leadership, NASA’s goal is to return to the moon by the end of the decade for the first time since the Apollo era in the 1960s and 1970s.
NASA’s Artemis program aims to land the first female on the moon by 2024.
