A new study has revealed that British Colombians strongly support further restrictions to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Insights West study suggests 87% of residents support the safer family plan, while 85% are in favor of making masks mandatory across BC.
When it comes to compulsory masks in schools, 83% support it for elementary and middle school and 84% support it for high school.
Considering the possibility of going back to a Phase 1-style “block” if things get worse, 61% are in favor.
Compared to when the pandemic broke out eight months ago, BC residents are only slightly less worried about the virus now in the middle of the second wave, compared to March.
The survey found that 84% of respondents are concerned about COVID-19 – 28% are very worried and 56% are quite worried.
Levels of those who are worried about contracting the virus themselves have dropped since March, with 83% worried, including 31% very worried. In March, 90% were worried and 48% were very worried.
Empathy has increased for restaurants and bars, as 43% think more should be done to help them while 38% say enough has been done.
Small retailers are expected to be the first to receive additional financial support from the provincial government, and 53% say more support is needed.
The idea of further implementing restrictions in areas with significant infections is supported with 79% supporting the idea of temporarily closing gyms and 80% supporting specific geo-blocks. Some regional restrictions were put in place on Saturday.
“The emergence of the planned Phase 2 pandemic has everyone in British Columbia nervous and worried,” says Insights West president Steve Mossop.
“This high level of concern has once again translated into high levels of support for existing and possibly new government measures to combat the spread of COVID-19 in our province, including some draconian measures that would once again threaten economic recovery in BC. This widespread support shows a united province in believing that we must do whatever it takes to slow the spread of the virus. “
