LONDON (Reuters) – Gulf states are working to bring Syria back to the Arab League after eight years of suspension, according to the Guardian newspaper.
"At some point next year, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will probably be welcomed into the Arab League to take his place among the leaders of the Arab world again," the newspaper said, citing an anonymous source.
The Guardian reported in his report that Syria was expelled from the League of Arab States in 2011 because of its violent response to the opposition, pointing out that this step has failed and has turned into a civil war.
He also stressed that the visit of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to Damascus last week was a friendly gesture of Saudi Arabia in light of its close relationship with Khartoum.
Diplomatic sources told the Guardian that there was a consensus among the 22 Arab League member states that Syria should be returned to the university, although the United States pressed Riyadh and Cairo to postpone the move.
The sources added that the desire to bring Syria back to the Arab League could be a new strategy of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in an attempt to remove Damascus from Teheran, fueled by promises to normalize trade relations and reconstruction, where the reconstruction of Syria needs about 400 billion dollars.
There is no Arab solidarity without Syria
The head of the Political Department of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Anwar Abdel Hadi, that the withdrawal from the decision to suspend Syria's membership of the Arab League will not be long, pointing out that "no Arab solidarity without Syria ".
In a statement to the Syrian daily "Al Watan", Abdul Hadi, who participates in the meetings and events of the Arab League, said: "There are efforts made by a large number of Arab countries trying to bring Syria back to its headquarters in Arab League ".
He added: "Many countries have no objections to this, and we believe that things will go in this direction, especially after it became clear that what was happening in Syria was largely aimed at destroying them to serve Israeli projects in the region" .
As for the countries that are making efforts to restore Syria to the university, he stressed that more than half of the Arab League countries support it.
