An “incredible” sighting

After the sighting of the meteor was reported to the science team, the crew were amazed to find that the meteorite had been perfectly captured by the streaming camera aboard the ship.

“What we saw by examining the live streaming footage stunned us, the size and brightness of the meteor were incredible”, CSIRO Investigator Travel director John Hooper said.

“The meteor crosses the sky directly in front of the ship and then breaks – it was great to watch the footage and we were very lucky to have captured everything on the ship’s live stream.”

At the time of video capture, the RV Investigator it was located in the Tasman Sea about 100 km (62 mi) south of the Tasmanian coast. The ship is in the area to undertake Huon Marine Park seabed mapping, conduct oceanographic studies and perform sea trials for a variety of marine equipment.

The meteor was filmed on Wednesday November 18 at 10:21 UTC or 21:21 AEDT (local time in Hobart, Tasmania).

RV Investigator in the “right place at the right time”

Live streaming camera on RV Investigator it broadcasts the view from the ship 24 hours a day and can be found on the MNF website.

Although many are said to have seen the meteor over Tasmania on November 18, no other known footage has emerged since.

“Cameras are everywhere, in our pockets and in our cities, but they need to be aimed at the right place at the right time – RV Investigator was in that place and in that moment, ” Glen Nagle of CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science She said.
