On Friday, November 13, iPhone 12 units began arriving to customers who had ordered them in our country. Among them is me, or rather my colleague Ervin, who has chosen one iPhone 12 Pro Max of 256 GB Gold. Okay, gold for a mistake of the finger that slipped in place of Pacific Blue. It still happens … It costs 6,899 lei to eMAG and we have an unboxing and first impressions below.
First of all it is the most powerful iPhone of the new quartet, but also the largest. It has 6.7 inch screen and a chamber superior to the other models. How are we doing with the box? It’s about the size of a small VHS tape, maybe smaller than that, and that’s why Apple no longer offers chargers and headphones. I kept repeating in the unboxing video “save the planet”, but there are 2 approaches here:
- less plastic sold by Apple
- fewer pallets loaded on ships, therefore less pollution of the oceans
I know, the bad mouths in the comments say it “Happle wants to steal from us and get rich with accessories”. I have directly quoted from at least 5 people who have commented in this way. More interesting would be to discuss how Samsung teased Apple then he took his posts off the web after he decided not to offer a charger with the Galaxy S21. But we don’t do politics here. I agree with those who say, however, that the phones could be a bit cheaper to reflect the lack of accessories. By the way, you don’t get them on older iPhones ordered now.
OK, so what do we have in the box? Manual, a small sticker with an apple, the SIM key and the lighting cable for USB-C. SO!
The phone measures 7.4mm at the waist and weighs 228 grams. Has a flat stainless steel frame like the iPhone 4 and rounded at the corners. The Gold variant is not my type, it is too shiny and reflective and you can see the fingerprints on it, with every print of my finger. The phone is also available in silver, Pacific Blue and Graphite. It looks like a big phone, especially wide, but maneuverable thanks to the flatness of the sides. Some rounding has facilitated its elimination.
Speaking of losses, we have protection Ceramic glass front, which lasts up to 4 times better than glass from previous years. The phone also has certification IP68, only now it can be submerged up to 6 meters deep, not 4. The screen is a Super Retina XDR OLED 6.7 inches, with HDR10 support and a resolution of 2778 x 1284 pixels, but also with Dolby Vision. It looks bright to me, but I’m worried that at 60% brightness I didn’t have the Sony camera upside down. In general, iPhones were very bright and I kept my iPhone 11 Pro at 20-30% to film it.
Inside we have a processor Apple A14 5 nm, with 11.8 billion transistors and ready to fight Kirin 9000, Exynos 2100 and Snapdragon 875. It is accompanied by 6 GB of RAM, 128, 256 or 512GB of storage. The fringe remained in place, as if it were the same size as before and houses a 12 MP selfie camera and a 3D ToF sensor for face unlock and Bokeh.
We also have stereo speakers, 4G and for the first time in Apple 5G, with coverage for many, if not all, tapes. We also get WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC and Lightning support. The battery is a unit of 3867 mAh, with 20W wireless charging and 15W wireless charging. This is where it comes in MagSafe, the MacBook-inspired magnetic system that lets you attach a variety of accessories to your back, including wireless charging or wallets.
And here we are in the back room. The undisputed star is 12 megapixel main camera, with technology Dual Pixel PDAF, but also a new type of optical stabilization. It is technology Moving the sensor, i.e. the sensor does not move the lens for better stabilization. It also has an F / 1.6 aperture, which captures a lot of light, but also larger pixels, 1.7 microns. The photo sensor itself is the largest used by Apple so far.
So we have a file 12 megapixel telephoto lens, with 2.5X zoom lens, optical stabilization and PDAF (bad guys say the 2.5X zoom is actually achieved with the ultrawide camera, today was an escape). Finally e appears 12MP ultrawide camera and we have the new sensor LiDAR on iPad Pro 2020. It is useful for capturing portraits in low light conditions and especially in low light conditions. It also helps Augmented Reality and an evolved Bokeh with even better plane separation.
We also get 4K footage at 60 FPS, but we also capture 10-bit HDR, Dolby Vision HDR, and ProRAW. The aforementioned main sensor next to the CPU offers 5000 image adjustments per second, for perfect stabilization. A new Smart HDR and night mode appear on all cameras, including selfies, but not the telephoto lens. There’s also a night mode portrait, which I can’t wait to try.
Conclusions after half an hour of playing with the phone? From large to very large, yet maneuverable and snug. The gold edge attracts fingerprints and the screen, while very bright, does not look as bright as the iPhone 11 Pro. We are also curious to clarify the problem with the zoom and above all to do some 5G tests, but we also receive a signal and a related card. The main photo sensor fascinated me with the technical details, but I want to see it in action. We are back with a review!
