What a HoneyBadger bitcoin kiosk looks like.
The CEO of a Bitcoin company says it was one of its ATMs that was snatched from a Dallas business earlier this week.
Police responded to Market Fresh Foods on November 9, around 4am, for a stolen ATM. Spurgeon says it wasn’t an ordinary ATM; rather, a specialized kiosk where people can buy and sell Bitcoins.
A witness had overheard a major accident and saw a white GMC pickup drive away with the ATM behind. Video surveillance led police to believe there were two suspects who committed the crime.
This is not the first time this has happened. Spurgeon claims that another HoneyBadger ATM was stolen in Kelowna in early October by Mike’s Produce.
The CEO believes the two cases are related; a white GMC pickup truck was also involved in the Okanagan theft.

“I can guarantee you that I know who the boy is,” Spurgeon says. “I can give you 99% guarantee that we have (told the police),” Here’s one of the people you need to talk to. “… By name, by license plate (license plate number), by phone number, by conversation telephone. “
This information, Spurgeon says, is collected when buying or selling bitcoin. As a “financial services business”, HoneyBadger must adhere to strict guidelines.
“Since we are Bitcoin, there is some concern about legitimacy, so we have to follow a lot of rules. We take pictures of every transaction; anyone who touches a car, we get their picture. Every phone call, we record, we We have a record. transaction, we actually have to get a physical ID from them. Because of that, we capture all of this information, which puts together a bit of a file, “he explains.
Spurgeon couldn’t disclose the value of the stolen Bitcoins, lest they give away the other machines, but said the ATM alone is $ 15,000. (The company has over 100 kiosks across Canada, including 10 indoors, in liquor stores, malls, and gas stations.)
Since Kamloops theft, HoneyBadger has started cleaning the machines every two days.
“It’s causing us a big expense, but we’re trying to mitigate our risk,” Spurgeon says, adding that they’re trying to offer a reward for the return of the ATM.
“We want to be community conscious. We also want to make sure the citizens of the interior know that we take this stuff seriously. We are a Vancouver based company and Bitcoin … there is some concern about its legitimacy and this kind of thing is not. help. “
Sgt. Darren Michels with the RCMP Kamloops says the file continues to be investigated.
“(We) have also been in contact with the Bitcoin company. We have also been in contact with other investigators to investigate this, but I am unable to release any details at this time to protect the integrity of the investigation. investigation is continuing and will provide an update when appropriate, “he writes in an email to Castanet.

The truck is a white and newer GMC model with a yellow tow strap in the box.
The suspects both wore hoodies and masks to hide their identities.
