Is it possible to fly through the center of the Earth and “jump” to the other side?

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a science fiction novel by the famous French author, Jules Verne, from 1864. The author captures a group of people who have decided to get married in the bowels of our planet and they managed to discover a new world full of mysterious creatures.

Today, we know for sure that there is no new world at the center of our blue planet, but the Unveiled YouTube channel looked into what such a journey could actually be like. Modern science knows that there is a mantle beneath the earth’s crust and below it we can find the outer and inner layers of the earth’s core. None so far failed to reach the center of the Earth, however, that doesn’t mean we have no idea what’s going on down there.

An inhospitable place

The outer layer of the core is made up of dissolved metals that reach dizzying temperatures. These temperatures can sometimes exceed the temperatures on the surface of the sun. The inner core layer is equally warm and incredibly dense. The pressure a person would be exposed to is 3.5 million atmospheres. A trained person without special equipment can withstand the pressure maximum of four atmospheres.

However, if there was a tunnel leading directly to the center of the Earth, one would fall for about 33 hours. The distance from the earth’s surface to our core is about 6,000 km. However, this is a preliminary estimate if normal conditions were to be taken into account. Even a trip to the center of the Earth would bring with it several changes in gravity itself.

Severity

The deeper we go into the bowels of the Earth, the weaker the effects of gravity are, because all flesh is above us. That is why no one can estimate the exact time it takes to get to the center of the Earth. But what happens when we get to Wednesday? Let’s think for a moment of dizzying temperatures and pressures. If someone fell through a tunnel that extends from one end of the Earth to the other, they probably would flew through the core and continued to the other side. But not for long.

Having already passed through the center we cannot speak of a fall, but of an uphill flight. After walking for some distance, the effects of gravity would reappear and the person would be unhappy pulled back to the center of the earth. He flew up and down like this until the forces matched and he was trapped in the middle of the Earth’s core.
