A massive vulnerability was discovered on Bitcoin Core and could have reportedly caused huge damage to the network. Litecoin founder Charlie Lee recently gave his stance on the matter on Twitter.
Last week, the co-owner of Bitcoin.org – who goes by the name of Cobra on Twitter – tweeted that a bug was found and fixed on Bitcoin Core.
A very scary bug in Bitcoin Core has just been fixed which could have crashed a huge chunk of the bitcoin network if exploited by any rogue miners. https://t.co/fMrgRiDaTP

Bitcoin Core 0.16.3 – the updated version – was released on the same day. It is said to be free from the exploitable bugs found on the 0.14.0 and 0.16.2 versions. Moreover, the bug is known to a vulnerability known as CVE-2018-17144 [Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures], which is basically a DoS [denial-of-service] attack.
Referring to the incident, a developer wrote on Twitter:
Ugh, 87% of the #Bitcoin network is * still * vulnerable to CVE-2018-17144. Every day this goes on, we are trusting miner (s) and lose credibility with the decentralized network claim. 😐

Lee responded to the tweet by stating:
There is no urgency to have all upgraded to 0.16.3. The majority of hashrate has already been upgraded, so they will ensure an invalid block is orphaned. This is no different than 0.13 nodes not upgrading and trusting miners to enforce. https://t.co/hx9iP1Mnej

Moreover, it could be extremely dangerous to get everyone to upgrade immediately to 0.16.3 since client diversity is a significant feature for a decentralized network. Lee wrote, "Having client diversity is very important as new bugs in newer versions. People should take their time to get comfortable with upgrades. "
He concluded by saying all the exchanges and merchant processors have probably been upgraded into order to protect themselves. "There are no incentives for miners to cheat." Nakamoto consensus game is to upgrade their nodes, we have already failed, "he added.
