iPhone 12 Mini in the test: small but powerful

13. November 2020 – With the iPhone 12 Mini, which will be shipped today from November 13, Apple offers a compact smartphone with which you do not (almost) have to compromise despite its small size, as our test shows.

Apple unveiled no fewer than four new iPhones in mid-October, with the smaller model the one some people have been looking forward to. In recent years, the development of the famous flagship smartphones has known only one direction: bigger is better. The higher the quality of the device, the bigger it must be, according to the motto, compact smartphones, on the other hand, have so far been mainly in the low and mid-range range. It’s different with the iPhone 12 Mini.

Aside from the smaller display, you hardly have to accept any compromises with the smallest device of the latest iPhone generation. For example, Apple has installed the same high-quality OLED panel for the 5.4-inch screen of the iPhone 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, and also with a slightly higher pixel density of 476 ppi. On the front, the Ceramic Shield surface is also used, which promises 4 times better drop resistance than the iPhone 11 and which we can say after the first few weeks with the iPhone 12 Pro that it is indeed extremely durable it looks. At least you can’t make out even the smallest scratch, even though our phone has already kissed the floor at one time or another.

5G is also on board the iPhone 12 Mini, making the device the most compact 5G smartphone on the market today. Inside, the new A14 Bionic chip ticks, the smartphone is waterproof up to 30 minutes and up to 6 meters and the new magnetic back for Magsafe accessories has also been implemented.

The main camera of the iPhone 12 Mini meanwhile matches that of the iPhone 12 and consists of an ultra wide angle lens (f / 2.4) and a wide angle lens (f / 1.6). The telephoto lens and LiDAR scanner of the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are missing, so only a 2x is offered instead of the 4x optical zoom of our iPhone 12 Pro comparison device, which is obviously evident in practice. Apart from that, the picture quality that the iPhone 12 Mini takes is in no way inferior to that of the iPhone 12 Pro. Even in the dark there are no differences in the photos: only when taking portraits at night the iPhone 12 Pro benefits from the use of the LiDAR scanner and provides slightly better images in direct comparison.

On the next page you can read where we still found deficits.
