Electronic leather or e-leather technology with its shortened name has begun to appear especially in the field of medicine in recent years. However, this technology is still under development and is already struggling with some problems. However, new research could provide important opportunities for electronic skin to be the technology of the future.
The electronic skin becomes more flexible and resistant
There are two problems with currently used e-leather devices. These skins cause circuit damage because they are too flexible or don’t stretch enough because they use more durable circuits. This is the biggest obstacle to using electronic skin in wearable tech devices, at least for now.
However, Yichen Cai and his team from King Abdullah University appear to have developed a new electronic skin. This new device features a hydrogel layer reinforced with strong and flexible silica nanoparticles. MXene titanium carbide is used for the skin sensing layer and this allows for a much more durable e-skin structure.
Since the hydrogel is made up of 70% water, it becomes more compatible with human skin. This new flexible structure is able to maintain its structure even after expanding up to 28 times in experiments.
In trials, this new discovery, which continued to perform well even after 5,000 deformations, was restored in about a quarter of a second after each trial.
The e-skin prototype has interesting features such as detecting objects from a distance of 20 centimeters, responding to stimuli in less than a tenth of a second and the ability to distinguish handwriting when used as a pressure sensor.
Electronic leather, which offers new possibilities in terms of wearable technology, appears to have overcome durability issues with this new research.
