The new was unveiled a few months ago for the European and North American market Volkswagen ID.4 now having seen the presentation of the version for the Chinese market and the big surprise is that instead of one there are … two!
Volkswagen’s electric SUV will be marketed as ID.4 Crozz And how ID.4 X. The former is identical to the ID.4 we will have here, while the latter has a notoriously different look.
For starters, the ID.4 X has different front and rear lights and new bumpers. Also, it is 20mm longer and 11mm taller. The wheelbase and width remained unchanged. As for the interior, the only difference that seems to exist between the two appears in the center console, with everything else identical between the two models.

At the rear, the differences between the ID.4 X and the ID.4 Crozz are evident.
The reasons behind the two ID.4
At this point, you may be wondering the reasons behind two separate (but still close enough) Volkswagen ID.4s in China. The reason is simple, but it also reveals the specificities that govern the Chinese market.
The separation of ID.4 into two distinct models is reflected in the two joint ventures that Volkswagen has in China to be able to produce cars locally.
In other words, the only way to avoid the existing high import rates is to produce locally, but to do so, all car manufacturers had to establish partnerships with local car manufacturers. The only exception to date has been Tesla (newcomer to the Chinese market), which has successfully negotiated its independence with the Chinese authorities.
You don’t need a “clinical eye” to see that the ID.4X is not the same as the ID.4 that will be sold here.

Returning to Volkswagen, this is the best-selling car brand in China, having established not one, but two joint ventures which originated FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC-Volkswagen. Two independent companies and both eager to produce ID.4, which will be the first MEB-based electric model to be produced in China.
We therefore have two ID.4s: FAW-Volkswagen will produce the ID.4 Crozz in Fosham while SAIC-Volkswagen will produce the ID.4 X in Shanghai. Each of these plants has the capacity to produce 300,000 units / year of electric SUVs and at the moment both have already started production of the ID.4 Crozz and ID.4 X.
The Volkswagen ID.4 Crozz is similar to the western version of the Volkswagen electric SUV.

With the Chinese market launch scheduled for spring 2021, there is still no technical data regarding the ID.4 Crozz and the ID.4 X. However, the most likely is that they will have the same motor and battery options that we find in the western Volkswagen ID.4.
