The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s huge camera module can easily be seen as long as it’s turned on the back, but its actual size depends on iFixit taking apart for a glimpse of it. It turns out that behind the three lenses there are not three small independent modules, but a block that wraps the three lenses along with their anti-shake mechanism. After opening the module further, iFixit found that the 12 Pro Max’s primary lens sensor was 47% larger than that of the iPhone 12, and its dimensions were so large that it may not fit the 12’s smaller body. The 12 Pro Max also has the largest 14.13 Wh battery among contemporary models (but still a bit smaller than the previous generation 11 Pro Max 15.04). The iFixit dismantling basically established that if you want the best camera, you need to buy the biggest iPhone. While it’s not impossible to “decentralize” the same lens into a smaller style, physical limitations mean some components (like batteries) will have to be sacrificed by then, and it may not be as good as the 12 Pro Max. have both.
