WINNIPEG – The Hudson’s Bay Company store in downtown Winnipeg officially closed its doors starting Monday, November 30, forever, even though it was scheduled to close in early 2021.
In a statement to CTV News, a company spokesman said the current COVID-19 situation in Manitoba has led to the closure.
“In light of the recently announced restrictions on non-essential retailing by the government of Manitoba, we have decided to close this location today,” the spokesperson said.
The iconic landmark was originally supposed to close in February 2021, due to changing consumer behaviors and changes to how and where people shop.
The store and building have had problems in recent years, and a recent appraisal of the building by a real estate appraiser said the building was worth $ 0.
Cushman & Wakefield ULC stated in its valuation that it would cost millions of dollars to sell the building.
The spokesperson said he will continue to make sure this building works well for the community.
“The historic building has been a landmark in Winnipeg for generations and we continue to strive to work with partners to find opportunities for this place that will positively impact the community.”
The shop was originally opened in November 1926.
Hudson’s Bay Company will continue to serve Winnipeggers as it has offices at CF Polo Park and the St. Vital Center.
