ELON Musk aims to ferry one million people to Mars by 2050.
The SpaceX CEO recently revealed that he predicts humans live in the planet’s glass domes, but many people are still wondering how long it would take to get there and is Mars also fit for life?
How long does it take to get to Mars?
There is an immense distance between Earth and Mars, which means that any trip to the red planet will take a long time.
It is made more complicated by the fact that the distance is constantly changing as the two planets revolve around the sun.
The closest distance between Earth and Mars would be a distance of 33.9 million miles, or 9,800 times the distance between London and New York.
It’s really rare though: the most useful distance is the average, which is 140 million miles.
Scientists on Earth have already launched a whole group of spacecraft to (or near) Mars, so we have a rough idea of how long it will take with current technology.
Historically, the journey took 128 to 333 days, certainly a huge amount of time for humans aboard a cramped spaceship.
Has anyone visited Mars?
No human has ever set foot on Mars.
The Soviets began sending unmanned space probes to Mars in the 1960s.
The first successful space probe orbiting Mars was NASA’s Mariner 4.
This happened in 1965. Soviet probes landed on the surface of the Red Planet in 1971.
Numerous spacecraft have since been sent to explore Mars, but we will have to wait a little longer before a person is sent.
NASA once revealed the goal of getting a person to Mars by 2037.
What is the possibility of life on Mars
Currently, no concrete evidence of past or present life on Mars has ever been found.
That doesn’t mean scientists aren’t watching.
There is evidence to suggest that the dry planet once had surface water and possibly habitable conditions.
However, just because a planet has habitable conditions does not automatically mean that there was or is life.
Is Mars suitable for life?

Mars is the second most habitable planet in our Solar System, after Earth of course.
It is not extremely hot or cold and is thought to have sufficient gravity for the human body to adapt.
However, there is no free oxygen in the atmosphere, so humans would not be able to breathe unless they had their own oxygen supply.
Humans should also wear a pressure suit.
Soil is toxic, water is in short supply, and you would need protection from radiation and cold.
Any life we have on Earth would have to be in some form of protective bubble if it were to survive on Mars.
Some scientists think we could change the planets’ atmospheres to be more habitable.
What year will humans go to Mars?
We don’t know for sure in which year humans will land on Mars.
NASA aims to put a man and the first woman on the moon in 2024.
After this mission, the red planet will be on the agenda and we could see a human on Mars in the 2030s according to current estimates.
Elon Musk has previously stated that he would like to send a human crew to Mars within the next decade.
